At Unama’ki Driving School, we are dedicated to empowering indigenous communities with the skills and confidence needed for safe driving. Founded and owned by an Aboriginal woman, our school is committed to providing culturally sensitive, high-quality driving instruction that meets the unique needs of our students.

Community Focus

Rooted in the heart of Unama’ki/Cape Breton, we proudly serve local indigenous communities and are expanding our services to other parts of Nova Scotia. Whether you’re from Cape Breton or Truro, our mission is to ensure every student feels supported and respected throughout their learning journey.

Defensive Driving

A 6-hour, self-paced course designed to enhance your driving skills and improve road safety. Successfully completing the course may result in up to four points being deducted from your driving record. Note: This does not apply to individuals under the Graduated Licensing System.

Driving School

A comprehensive driving program approved by the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation, featuring 25 hours of classroom theory and 10 hours of in-vehicle training. The program includes the road test as part of the package.

Driving Lessons

Flexible driving lessons and private one-on-one instruction to fit your needs. Choose from single or multi-hour lessons, with the option for personalized private lessons to enhance your driving skills.

Defensive Driving

Overview: Enhance your driving skills with our 6-hour, self-paced defensive driving course.

Benefits: Successfully completing this course may result in up to four points being deducted from your driving record (for points that were first entered and are still existing). Note: Not applicable to those under the Graduated Licensing System.

Driving School

Overview: Our comprehensive driving school program includes:

  • 25 hours of classroom theory
  • 10 hours of in-vehicle training
  • Road test included

Additional Fees:

$275: Road test in Port Hawkesbury (car only)

Students:

$140: Road test in Sydney (if failed; includes 1 hour of additional instruction)

$210: Road test in Baddeck (if failed; includes 1 hour of additional instruction)

Non-Students:

$200: Road test in Sydney (car only)

$250: Road test in Baddeck (car only)

Plan Three

Driving Lessons:

  • 1 hour: $70
  • 3 hours: $150 (available only to students)

Private Lessons:

  • One-on-One: $180

Driving Test Fees for Students:

  • Free: Road test in Sydney
  • $60 extra: Road test in Baddeck (pay on the day of the test)
  • $80 extra: Road test in PHK (pay on the day of the test)

Additional Services:

Reprint of Driving School Certificate: $30

Sophia Basque

(Founder and owner of Unama’ki Driving School)

Recognizing the need for accessible and affordable driving education in her community, Sophia took the initiative to start her own driving school. After noticing that many students and young adults were unable to afford driving school or had to commute long distances to attend, she became certified and established Unama’ki Driving School.

Her vision has significantly benefited the community, leading to increased opportunities for students and young adults to obtain their licenses. Sophia’s dedication has helped individuals of all ages achieve their driving goals, making a positive impact on local mobility and independence.

Natashia Sylliboy

(Driving Instructor / Defensive Driving Instructor)

Natasha Sylliboy is a seasoned driving instructor with extensive experience in both classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction. With years of dedication to teaching, Natasha excels in providing comprehensive driving lessons that build confidence and skills in her students.

In addition to her regular driving instruction, Natasha is also a certified defensive driving instructor, bringing an added layer of expertise to her teaching. Her commitment to excellence and safety makes her a valued member of our team, helping students achieve their driving goals with confidence and competence.

Delena Sylliboy

(Driving School Instructor)

Hi, I’m Delena Sylliboy, a driving instructor here at Unamaki Driving School. At 30 years old and with two wonderful children, I understand the importance of balancing work and family life. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy playing video games and baking delicious treats.

I truly love my job because it’s incredibly rewarding to see the joy and excitement on our students’ faces when they achieve their driving milestones. Helping people earn their licenses and reach this significant life goal is what makes my role so fulfilling.
